Championship midweek Review

Reading moved to the top of table after their win on Tuesday. The Royals with their fifth win of the season sit three points clear of Bristol City. City suffered a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday evening going down to Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough.

Wednesday night saw Bournemouth earn at point at Cardiff, a home win for Watford and Brentford win at Sheffield Wednesday. Bournemouth remain unbeaten so far and are currently fourth. Watford’s win sees them in thrid spot three points behind leaders Reading.

Tuesday’s Action

Reading won at the Madejski thanks to a Lucas Joao goal on 64 minutes. A long ball from the back was taken down by Joao with his back to goal. Turning past two Wycombe defenders he then fired low into the net. Another clean sheet for Reading who have the best defence in the division. A sixth defeat for Wycombe, and having managed only one goal puts them in a difficult position in their first ever Championship Campaign.

Reading manager Veljko Paunovic said after the game:

“Defensively, we’re looking solid so far but we have to keep working to improve going forward and game by game, we’ll keep building and progressing”.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth, meanwhile, had this to say:

“I think six defeats on the spin is a first for me and it’s not a nice feeling. We need to get a win on the board and I’m sure that’s just around the corner”.

Bristol City dropped to second after gifting Middlesbrough the winning goal at Ashton Gate. Playing out from the back Bristol defender Luke Moore got caught and lost the ball to George Saville who then slotted it past the advancing keeper.

This was Bristol City’s first defeat of the season, manager Dean Holden told BBC Bristol:

“We were nowhere near the level we were at previously, we didn’t have a shot on target during the game and our performance levels were well below where we’ve been”.

Neil Warnock’s Boro are 11th and the veteran manager told BBC Tees:

“We were always dangerous going forward, we just couldn’t get the bit of luck and we get a goal like that, we worked on closing down and George Saville did exactly that and it’s nice when you get your reward”.

Millwall moved into a Play-off place courtesy of a 2-0 win at home to Luton. A Cranie own goal in first half stoppage time and a stunner from Connor Mahoney. Mahoney’s shot form the edge of the box going in off the post.

Derby’s poor start continued as they lost at Huddersfield by a goal from Juninho Bacuna. Its four games unbeaten for the Terriers. Derby have now lost five of their six games who are in the relegation places.

Swansea remain in the play-off places following their draw with Coventry City. Jordan Shipley after 19 minutes gave Coventry the lead. Andre Ayew equalised on 41 minutes.

Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United shared the points after a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. Daniel Barlaser with a penalty for Rotherham after 51 minutes was cancelled out by Sammi Ameobi goal on 79 minutes. Norwich made it two wins in a row beating Birmingham City by a goal to nil. Mario Vranic with the goal on 87 minutes.

Wednesday’s Action

Watford moved up to third after a 3-1 win over Blackburn. A lovely piece of passing was finished by Pedro to give Watford the lead after just 13 minutes. Ismaila Sarrs’ skilful control gave him the chance to shoot, his shot was saved but fell to Tom Cleverley who headed in an open goal. Rovers hit back before half time when Brereton brought the ball down with his chest and volleyed into the bottom right corner from outside the box.

Watford restored their two goal lead just after the restart. A cross from the Watford left was turn into the Blackburn net by Darragh Lenihan. Blackburn had a lifeline to salvage something from the game on 69 minutes when Lewis Holtby was brought down in the box. Alex Armstrong took the spot kick putting it to Ben Forsters right. The keeper went the right way and pushed the ball wide.

Bournemouth dropped below Watford after drawing at Cardiff. The Cherries lead at half time thanks to a Dominic Solanke goal on 35 minutes. Jack Stacey’s cross from the Cardiff left found Solanke free inside the six yard box to tap home. Cardiff had chances in the first half, Harry Wilson shot from the edge of the box zipped just past the post.

The Stacy-Solanke combo almost made it two nil if not for a stunning close range save from Alex Smithies. The game was wide open and Harry Wilson struck the bar from a free kick as Cardiff looked to level. Will Vaulks saw his header from Wilson’s corner tipped over by Asmir Begovic. Cardiff did get level on 62 minutes. Hoiletts’ low ball across the box missed Robert Glatzel but went to Harry Wilson who sent his side footed shot into the corner. Stanislas struck the bar from a free kick, as Bournemouth press for a winner. Cardiff held on to get their first home point of the season.

Two goals from Ivan Toney either side of a Callum Patterson goal gave Brentford all three points at Hillsborough. The win sees Brentford one point behind sixth placed Swansea. Wednesday still have a navigate points tally of -4 which leaves then 7 points adrift of Barnsley.

Barnsley twice lead at Stoke with goals from Elliot Simoes and dominik Frieser. Stoke leveled first though Tyrese Campbell and then Tom Smith. Stoke’s Nathan Collins saw red for an off the ball incident with Frieser.

Preston continued their good away form with a 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers. Daniel Johnson with a first half penalty and Scot Sinclair with another in the second half. Preston top the table on away form so if they can fin some form at Deepdale they could really challenge towards the top this season.

World Cup winner Jack Charlton dies age 85

World Cup winner with England and former Republic of Ireland Manager Jack Charlton has died at the age of 85.

The former Leeds United defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma and also had dementia.

Big Jack as he was affectionately known, passed away peacefully at his Northumberland home on Friday, his family said.

Charlton, the older brother of Manchester United legend Bobby, was part of England’s World Cup winning side of 1966.

He spent his entire club career with one club- Leeds United- from 1950- 1973, making a record 762 total competitive appearances for the Whites.

With his time at Leeds United, he helped them to the Second Division Title (1963-4) and First Division Title (1968-9).

His spell at Leeds also yielded an FA Cup win (1972), League Cup (1968), Charity Shield (1969) and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup’s in 1968 and 1971.

Charlton was called up to the England team just days before his 30th birthday and went on to make 35 international appearances and scored six goals.

He appeared in two World Cups and one European Championship but will be remembered most for his no nonsense defending as a centre back.

After his playing days were over, he decided to turn his hand to management and led Middlesbrough to the second division title in 1973-4.

He spent four years in the North East before resigning in April 1977, where he took charge of Sheffield Wednesday for six seasons.

Despite a short spell back at Middlesbrough as caretaker manager and one season at Newcastle, he always had aspirations to manage at International level.

He took charge of the Republic of Ireland national side in 1986 and led them to their first ever World Cup in 1990, where they reached the quarter-finals.

In his ten-year stint in charge of Ireland he also led the Irish to qualification at Euro 1998 and the 1994 World Cup.

In January 1996, Charlton resigned from his position and went into retirement.

Big Jack was a football man, loved and adored by everybody in the football world.

To spend an entire career at one club in today’s world is unheard off. To hear so many nice words said about such a gentleman speaks for itself.

Jack Charlton’s name will live forever with not just Leeds fans, but Irish football fans who fittingly called him a legend.

It would be fitting if Leeds United can go on and seal promotion to the Premiership in memory of not just Charlton, but two other greats who passed away this year. Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry.

Sheffield Wednesday Vs Nottingham Forest Match Preview as EFL Championship Returns

The EFL Championship Returns

Well it has been a long three months since a ball was last kicked in the Championship. and the whole footballing world has taken a back seat as the Covid 19 Pandemic took hold with every major sporting event postponed. Fans of all teams must have been asking would football ever return?  Well as it turns out both League One and League Two being called off . Subsequently, it is the Premier League and the EFL Championship that are going ahead.

So Sheffield Wednesday Vs Nottingham Forest is a match the Forest fans have been waiting for to see how the team has handled three months of no football. They have all been back in training at the Nigel Doughty Academy and with only nine games left to go in the season its all still to play for. Forest are sitting in 5th place, very nicely in the Play-off places on 60 points, with opponents Sheffield Wednesday 15th in the League currently on 48 points, 12 behind Forest and only six behind Preston North End, who hold the last Play Off Place. Both sides had lost their last games before lockdown happened. Forest suffered a 3-0 at home defeat to Millwall, while Wednesday lost 5-0 away to Brentford.

When the sides last meet in the League it was a game that most Forest Fans will want to forget as the Reds were beaten 4-0 at home, this being the worst performance in the League this season.

” I take full account for this performance it was way below our way of playing and i will do everything i can to put it right”

Sabri Lamouchi after the 4-0 home loss to Wednesday

That game will not live long in the minds of most Forest fans, who were there that day as Forest were 4-0 down by half time and most of the 28,002 who attended had walked out at half-time. Never before have so many fans left a game after the first half!

Fast forward on from that game and Forest are now in a better place then they were that day, sitting in 5th place 10 points of second place West Brom and 11 Points off top spot Leeds United. Can Forest continue on there quest for promotion and finally go back to the top league. If Forest want to start this mini-season in the best way then they have to do all they can to come back with all three points. This means stopping Jordan Rhodes, who just loves playing against the reds as it was his 15 minute hat-trick that set the Owls on there way to victory when the sides last met.

Forest will have Samba Sow and Thiago Silva back to boost the midfield, the pair were injured before the lockdown.

Karl’s Score Prediction Sheffield Wednesday 2-3 Nottingham Forest

Report: Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Leeds United

SHEFFIELD Wednesday and Leeds United played out a goalless draw at a wet Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls and The Whites who are both going for automatic promotion this season cancelled each other out as they had to settle for a point a piece following a 0-0 draw.

It was the hosts who had the games first chance, midfielder Adam Reach, was played through on goal but was denied by a good stop from Leeds keeper’ Kiko Casilla, who raced out of goal to make the stop.

Reach almost got in again after good play from Steven Fletcher, but this time, defender Ben White made a good block to keep his shot out.

It was the Owls who continued to press, Kadeem Harris’ cross found Liam Palmer on the edge of the area, but his effort from 25 yards was brilliantly saved by Casilla before it went behind for a corner.

Leeds’ first chance came when Helder Costa broke into the Sheffield Wednesday’s box and saw his cross cleared for a corner, from the set-piece, defender Luke Ayling couldn’t get his strike away.

Inside the 23rd minute, Costa set up Ezgjan Alioski but his effort from 20-yards was too high and over the top.

With the half drawing to a close both sides won free-kicks. First it was the hosts, but Barry Bannan’s free-kick was poor and easily claimed by Casilla. At the other end, Patrick Bamford was felled by Atdhe Nuihu, but Kalvin Phillips’ delivery wasn’t one of his best and the Owls cleared.

Soon after the first booking of the game arrived when Joey Pelupessy was cautioned for a foul on Costa, before Casilla was forced into action.

Fletcher tried his luck from 25-yards but the Spaniard was equal to it to make a brilliant save, at the other end, Jack Harrison crossed brilliantly for Bamford but only for a superb save from Keiren Westwood kept the scores level.

Half Time: Sheffield Wednesday 0 – Leeds United 0

It was the hosts who started the brighter after the restart, winning a free-kick 25-yards out, Bannan’s effort from the set-piece struck the wall.

Leeds’ first attempt of the second half came on the 50th minute, Harrison to Phillips to strike from 25-yards but his curling effort isn’t far away from finding the top corner.

The Owls’ next move saw Bannan’s lovely centre reach Fletcher but he can’t convert, at the other end, Eddie Nketiah’s effort was thwarted by Westwood. The chances for both teams were pouring in.

Leeds went close to opening the scoring, Nketiah did brilliantly down the left, as he broke into the box, cut back for Harrison whose effort was cleared off the line by Morgan Fox, crossed back in where Alioski sees an header come back off the post.

Harris’ cross-cum-shot was superbly tipped around the post by Casilla who then made another brilliant stop to deny Nuihu.

That was the last meaningful action for either side in the contest, as they kept the pressure on West Bromwich Albion at the top of the Championship.
